Commissioners Approve 2018 Lodging Tax Grant Awards
Awards approved for five organizations that promote tourism

OLYMPIA – On Tuesday, the Board of County Commissioners voted to approve the 2018 Lodging Tax Grant Awards to five tourism type activities, using the Public Stadium, Convention, Arts, and Tourism excise tax fund.

The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) received five applications for review. All five applications met the criteria, impact, and funding requirements to move forward as recommendations to the Board.

The awards, totaling $41,000 included:

  • Olympic Flight Museum’s Olympia Air Show - $5,000
  • Saint Martin’s University Dragon Boat Festival - $6,000
  • Washington State Senior Games - $5,000
  • Wolf Haven International Public Sanctuary Support and Education - $5,000
  • Thurston County Fair - $20,000

“This is a great program for our citizens and visitors to our County,” said Commissioner Gary Edwards. “We need to do everything we can with this dedicated funding source to help these organizations succeed and bring additional tourism to Thurston County.”

Background:
Public Stadium, Convention, Arts, and Tourism excise tax funds must be used to promote tourism events, locations, and activities for the purpose of attracting visitors to this area. The tax revenue may also be used to pay for capital and/or operating costs for some tourism-related facilities, the operation of visitor/convention agencies, and the operation and marketing of special events and festivals designed to attract tourists.

The grants must be used for tourism-related services in Thurston County occurring in 2018. High priority is given to tourism activities including having potential to result in overnight stays by tourists in lodging establishments in the County, promoting County events, activities, and places, demonstrate documented economic benefit, and enhancing or maintaining County-owned tourism facilities or infrastructure.
