HazoHouse Acceptance for Residential Waste

HazoHouse accepts household hazardous waste from Thurston County residents for free.

Please bring waste in five-gallon containers or smaller. No broken, leaking, or empty containers (excluding propane containers) will be accepted at the HazoHouse.

 Limitation: 5 gallons per vehicle per day.

Batteries: 

  • Alkaline
  • NiCd
  • Mercury
  • Lithium
  • Lead Acid
 Limitation: Alkaline batteries are not accepted. Batteries must weigh less than 2 pounds each and be placed in individual plastic bags.
Biomedical/Medical Waste Not Accepted. For information on how to dispose of unwanted medication, visit Thurston County Public Health & Social Services.
Chemicals/Cleaners Limitation: 5 gallons per vehicle per day. Chemicals must remain in original containers and must not be empty or leaking.
Cooking Oil Not Accepted.

Electronic Waste (E-Waste)

 Not Accepted. To find an electronics recycling location near you, please visit ecyclewa.org. The Washington State Department of Ecology coordinates collection sites and enforces the law through the E-Cycle Washington program. Electronics brought to the Thurston County Waste & Recovery Center or Rainier & Rochester Drop-Box Facilities will be disposed of as municipal solid waste, for a fee. Please note that an $18 special handling fee applies to dispose of TVs or monitors.

  • Road Flares
  • Signal/Marine Flares
 Limitation: Only Aerosols and Road Flares are accepted. For Aerosols, containers must not be empty or leaking. Ammunition/Reloading Material, Fireworks, and Signal/Marine Flares are strictly prohibited. Spent fireworks that have been soaked in water for at least 24 hours can be disposed of as garbage and are not accepted at the HazoHouse. For disposal of unused fireworks, please call the Washington State Fire Marshal at (360)596-3900 to arrange a pickup. Fluorescent Bulbs

  • Fluorescent Lights
  • Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) 
  • High Intensity Discharge (HID)
 Limitation: 10 per vehicle per day. No broken bulbs or light tubes taped together. If possible, transport in original boxes/containers. Ballasts labeled "No PCBs" should be disposed of as garbage. 

Mercury-Containing Products

  • Thermometers
  • Lights
 Limitation: Place in original containers or two sealable plastic bags. No broken items.

Paint-Related Materials

  • Glues & Adhesives
  • Latex/Oil-Based Paint
  • Primers, Stains, Sealers, Clear Coats
  • Thinners & Solvents
 Limitation: 10 gallons per vehicle per day.
Pesticides/Herbicides Limitation: 5 gallons per vehicle per day.
Pool & Hobby Chemicals Limitation: 5 gallons per vehicle per day.

Propane Containers

  • Standard Barbeque 
  • Compact Camp Stove
  • Small/Narrow
 Limitation: 3 propane tanks per vehicle per day. No individual containers exceeding 5 gallons. 
Radioactive Waste Not Accepted.
