Division II Floral Design – “America the Beautiful"

Bring your design entry on Monday, July 25 between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. to the Thurston Expo Center to be entered in the show.
Your container should be removed on Sunday July 31 after the fair closes, between 8-9 p.m. or Monday, August 1st between 9 - 11 a.m.


  1. Entries in this Division, Sections "A" through "D", must be pre-registered by Sunday, July 10th by calling the Consultant listed with each section.
  2. If after committing to an entry, a designer is unable to enter the class, it is the designer’s responsibility to find a replacement and notify the Section Consultant.
  3. Each design must have been created and placed by one exhibitor.
  4. Only one entry per exhibitor is allowed in any Class.
  5. A minimum of four (4) exhibits is required in each class except in Section E 
  6. Absolutely NO artificial flowers, fruit or foliage permitted.
  7. FRESH plant material may not be treated in any manner, including dye or paint. Take care with commercially available flowers – some are dyed.
  8. Adult Design width is limited to approximately 24" of table space unless otherwise stated within the class description
  9. Landscapes and/or scenes are not accepted in this Division.
  10. Exhibitors are responsible for keeping their exhibits in good condition for the duration of the Fair. FREE ADMITTANCE IS ALLOWED DAILY AT 9:30 AM
  11. Featured objects, accessories, container-grown plants growing in soil (where appropriate) and living plants with roots attached are permitted in all classes. Special effects are allowed where power is available.
  12. Living members of the Animal Kingdom are not permitted.
  13. American and other national flags are not permitted. Religious figures are to be displayed in a respectful manner.
  14. FRESH plant material is to be emphasized in this show.
  15. Plant materials used in this division do not need to have been grown by the exhibitor and may be commercially grown. Plant material in design must be listed on entry card or separate index card.
  16. Cut fruits or vegetables are permitted if sealed unobtrusively to discourage insects, odors and discoloration.
  17. Youth will enter their designs in Division IV, Section B. Class 19.
  18. Staging panels are allowed if used within the space permitted/allowed for each class.
  19. Designer is on his/her honor that the design being entered has not been previously entered or judged in an NGC Standard Flower Show.
  20. All tables to be covered with black table cloths provided by the Show Committee.

ACCESSORY: A subordinate object other than plant material used in a design e.g. a figurine, rock, etc.

BUFFET TABLE: In a Table Class, service for 4 or more with components conveniently and logically placed for ease of self-service.  At least 1 service piece required.  A decorative unit must be included.

CREATIVE LINE DESIGN: A Creative design in which line direction is dominant, characterized by open silhouette, a minimum of plant material and other components. Dominant feature is the movement in any direction, either vertically, horizontally, diagonally, etc.

DECORATIVE UNIT: In a Table Class, floral designs with or without other components such as candles or other accessories if any.

DESIGNERS CHOICE: Designer's choice of plant material.

EXHIBITION TABLE SETTING: Components relating to the service of food artistically arranged without consideration of functional placement. It may not include a completed decorative unit, but must include some plant material placed artistically.

FUNCTIONAL TABLE SETTING: A table planned and set for actual service of food for 2 or more persons. A decorated united must be included.

LOW PROFILE DESIGN: A three-dimensional design incorporating three (3) or more design techniques from the list of Design Techniques in the Handbook page 78.

PETITE DESIGN: A design of 3" to 12"; schedule determines height, width and depth.

Designs in this Division are eligible for NGC Top Exhibitor Awards, WSFGC Past President's Awards and Local Thurston County Top Awards.

Section "A" - "National Wonders"

Petite Designs

Eligible for the NGC Petite Award and Judith Juno Petite Design Awards


  1. "Mojave" All dried design not to exceed 5" in any direction staged on clear acrylic stands with a surface area of 4" x 4"provided by the show committee.
  2. "Yellowstone National Park" A combination of fresh & dried plant material not to exceed 8" in any direction staged on an area 12" x 15" of an 8' table provided by the show committee.
  3. "Olympic National Park" All fresh mass design not to exceed 12" in any direction, staged on 15" x 24" an 8' table, provided by the show committee.

Section "B" – "Let Freedom Ring"

Designers Choice:  All fresh OR all dried OR a combination of plant material  

Eligible for the NGC Designers Choice Award 


4. "Liberty Bell" - A design using a frame of any size staged on 24"  wide x 30" deep of an 8' table.  Designers Choice of frame size & style. Need not include  a bell.

5. "Bill of Rights" - A low profile design on 36" of a 6' table.

 6. "Our Constitution" - A creative line design staged on a black pedestal, 36" tall, with a round top 18" in diameter.

Section "C" - "Land of Plenty" tables

Functional Tables

All entries must include an all-fresh decorative unit.

Eligible for the NGC Table Artistry Award and the WSFGC Phyllis Danielson Table Setting Award.


7. "Yankee Doodle Dandy"- A children's table for 2 for breakfast staged on a card table approximately 34" x 34"

8. "Independence" - A single dinner place setting on 24" of an 8' table.

9. "Fruited Plains" - A buffet brunch staged on a 6' table.

Section "D" - "Liberty and Justice"

Exhibition Tables

10. "Rockets Red Glare" featuring the service of cocktails during fireworks and the color red staged on a black pedestal, 36" high with a round top 20" in diameter.

11. "Bread Basket" a table for a picnic staged on 24" of an 8' banquet table.  Interpretation of "Bread Basket" is up to the designer.

12. "Boston Tea Party" an al fresco Tea Party staged on a round accent tables 30" tall and 20" in diameter covered with a black table cloth, provided by the show committee.

Section "E" - "Community Designs"

13. "Victory" The Show committee invites members of the community to enter an all fresh design of their choice that follows the show theme. Exhibit should be no larger than 12" in any direction.
