Eligible for a Youth Achievement Award and the NATIONAL GARDEN CLUB Youth Top Exhibitor Award.

General requirements:
Exhibits are entered on Tuesday, July 30th between 4-7 p.m. at the Thurston Expo Center. All entries in Sections B, C, and D should be registered with the Youth Entry Chairman/Consultant no later than Sunday, July 14th.
No pre-registration is needed for horticulture entries.

General Rules:

  1. Youth Exhibits are grouped as follows:
    • Junior - Preschool through age seven
    • Intermediate - Ages eight through twelve.
    • (ADV) High School – Ages 13 through 18.
  2. All National Garden Club policies and rules apply.
  3. All Horticulture entries must be grown by the exhibitor, although plants can be part of a family garden or yard.
  4. Educational exhibits require a minimum of 6 square feet and may be created by more than one youth.
  5. Section B, C, and D – No artificial plant material allowed. Plant material must be listed.
  6. Photographs must be in a portrait/vertical, 5"X7", mounted on a black, 8"X10" matted frame. Staging will be done by the Show Committee.
  7. Entry cards for Section A will be filled out by exhibitor in advance. They are available in the Fair office and from Black Hills District Presidents. A list is available at

Section "A"Horticulture - "Farmer’s Market-Mercado de Horticultores"
Open to all youth age groups


  1. "Hot Peppers & Orchids-Pimientos picantes y orquídeas"

Notes: a. & b. – Bring your horticulture entry in water in a clear beverage bottle of appropriate size with label removed. Leaves should be removed from the stem that is in the water.
c. – Foam plates will be provided by the Show Committee at time of entry. Any vegetable accepted; however, because the show lasts for 5 days please avoid those that wilt quickly, such as lettuce.

  1. Flowering annuals (annual plants complete their life cycle within one growing season, typically, from spring to fall)
  2. Flowering perennials (plants that persist for many growing seasons; generally, the top portion of the plant dies back each winter and regrows the following spring)
  3. Garden vegetables

Section "B" Design - "Floral Design-Deseno Floral"
Open to all youth age groups   
Limited to 4 entries for each age group

Note: Floral design is the art of using plant materials and flowers to create a pleasing and balanced composition.


  1. "Bright Party-Fiesta Brillante" a small design measuring no more than 8" tall and 8" wide. Designer’s choice of container and flowers and other plant material.

Section "C" Educational Exhibits - "Exposiciones educativas"
Open to youth in the Intermediate and (ADV) High School groups
Limited to 4 entries


  1. "Alli’s Gifts - Regalos de Alli "
    Design an exhibit about Alpacas. Where are they raised in South America? What do they eat? What products are made from their wool? What else do you think is interesting about the Alpacas? The exhibit size should not be more than 24" X 30" as it will be staged on 24" of an 8 foot table. Some type of plant material - fresh or dried- should be used in the exhibit.

Section "D" Botanical Arts - "Artes botanicas"
Open to all youth age groups. Limited to 4 entries per age group.


  1. "Crafts-Artesania" Exhibits will be displayed flat on a covered, 8’ table by the show committee.
    1. "Mapa-Map"
      Chilean Products Map (natural resources)- Make a map of Chile on poster board no larger than 12"X12" illustrating the country’s natural resources. The exhibitor is encouraged, but not required, to include the use of live or dried plant material.
    2.  "Beans-Frijoles"Dried
      A bean picture of an Alpaca or Chilean natural resource. Make a design of your choice with multi-colored dried beans on poster board no larger than 12" X 12".
