July 2021 - Dry weather conditions make brush and vegetation a great fuel source for the spread of fires that can threaten lives and property. Due to the dry conditions, Thurston County enacted a fire safety burn ban as well as an emergency ban on the discharge of consumer fireworks in unincorporated Thurston County. While the discharge of consumer fireworks may be banned, that doesn't mean we can't celebrate. Here are five fun ways you can celebrate Independence Day without fireworks!

1. Plan an American Movie Marathon

Opt for a freedom inspired movie night! Pop some popcorn, grab your favorite snacks, dim the lights, and create a line up of some of your favorite movies.

 2. Create your own light show with glow sticks, flashlights, and party poppers

Instead of lighting up the sky with fireworks, light up the house with glow sticks, flashlights, and make some noise with party poppers! Add some extra fun by testing your knowledge of American history.

3. Write a letter to the military

Independence Day is a great time to reflect on military service. Sit down and write a letter to a service member thanking them and their family for their service to the nation. You can send the letter through an organization like Support Our Troops, or choose to use the activity as a private way of expressing gratitude.

4. Throw a birthday party for America

Buy or bake a cake, decorate the house in red, white, and blue, and throw a birthday party for the United States. While a fire safety burn ban is in place, the use of charcoal briquettes, gas, and propane barbeques is permitted on private residential properties.   

5. Head to a lake or beach

Independence Day is a great time to check out Thurston County's many different bodies of water, including the Puget Sound. Check out these tips from Thurston County Public Health and Social Services to help you assess water quality before you head out to enjoy your favorite water activities.

Per Thurston County code, the ban on the discharge of consumer fireworks applies Saturday, July 3, and Sunday, July 4, 2021, but there are permitted fireworks displays happening around Thurston County.
