Thurston County Public Works is partnering with the Department of Ecology to offer free cargo nets to customers at drop-box facilities in Rainier and Rochester the second weekend in June.

The cargo nets will be available at the Rainier Drop-box on Saturday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Rochester Drop-box on Sunday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers are encouraged to register for their cargo net in advance to avoid potentially long wait times.

The giveaway follows National Secure Your Load Day, and is part of a multi-jurisdictional effort bringing awareness to the importance of securing your load properly when traveling to a disposal facility.

Quick Facts

  • Unsecured loads cause more than 300 crashes in Washington every year.
  • 12 million pounds of litter is tossed or blown onto Washington roads every year. Up to 40% comes from unsecured cargo and debris that falls or is blown out of pickup truck beds, trailers, and boats.
  • A 20-pound object, like a TV, at 55 mph has a force of 1,000 pounds at impact.
  • Littering and driving with an unsecured vehicle load are against the law in Washington, with fines ranging from $50 to $5,000.

Even if it's a short trip, you're going slow, or you're hauling items that seem heavy enough to stay put, securing your load is vital to keeping roads safe and litter free.

Tips to Secure Your Load

  • Strap down: securely fasten large items directly to your vehicle. Make sure to securely tie down any covering.
  • Seal tight and cover: make sure boxes, bags, and garbage cans are tightly closed and strapped down or covered to keep contents from blowing away.
  • Get organized: lay tall items flat and put lighter cargo at the bottom of the load so heavier objects can hold them down. Make sure not to overload.
  • Follow through: run straps through and around items- especially large items like hand trucks, ladders, furniture, and mattresses.
  • Tidy up: remove any loose pieces of trash from your truck, trailer, or boat that could blow out while driving.
  • Check regularly: nothing you haul should be able to slide, shift, or fall out. If you hear whipping or rattling sounds while driving, stop in a safe place and check your cargo.
