Thurston County Site One of Three Finalists for State Prison Reception Center

A location in south Thurston County has been chosen as one of three properties to move forward in the selection process for a new State Prison Reception Center. The Maple Lane School location in Grand Mound will now be examined further by the State Department of Corrections along with sites in Mason County and Bremerton. The planned Reception Center on the west side of the state will be used to temporarily house new state prison inmates so they can be evaluated before being transferred to a state prison to serve their terms.

Thurston County Manager Don Krupp says there would be some advantages to having the Reception Center located in the county. "As most folks know by now, Maple Lane School is set to close, which will mean the loss of about 250 jobs. The Reception Center will provide about 500 jobs and will also be a boost to the general economy of the south county both during construction and after."

Thurston County Commission Chair Karen Valenzuela says it's important for county residents to track the proposal. "We encourage people to take part in the review that will start now that Thurston County is one of the finalists for this facility. The Department of Corrections has promised a very public process of evaluation including an Environmental Impact Statement so there should be plenty of opportunities for input."

More information on the site selection process can be found by visiting the State Department of Corrections Web site at http://www.doc.wa.gov/
