Thurston County Changes Method of Special Telephone Access
Switch to state system replaces local system

OLYMPIA - Thurston County is switching from a local special telephone access program to the state's program. The county values its citizens and wants to ensure equal telephonic access to all. With that in mind, the county is transitioning away from the county's current TTY/TDD (Text Telephone) machine to a similar state system.

Those who are deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing or speech impaired may use the statewide relay system to reach Thurston County offices and departments to conduct their business telephonically. Relay users can simply dial 7-1-1 (or 1-800-833-6388) to connect with Washington Relay.

Once someone contacts the system, they use a TTY to type the conversation to a relay operator. The operator then reads the message to a standard telephone user. The operator then relays the person's spoken words by typing them back to the TTY user.

The change will go into effect March 1, 2017.
