Commissioners Appoint Maria Aponte as Director of Human Resources
Ms. Aponte will begin her role as director on Monday, April 22

​OLYMPIA – After an extensive national recruitment process, the Thurston County Board of Commissioners have appointed Ms. Maria Aponte as the Human Resources Department Director. Ms. Aponte is currently serving as the Human Resources Department’s Interim Director. 


The Commissioners held an executive session this morning, April 16, 2019, and voted during an open public meeting to appoint Ms. Aponte to her position. She accepted the position and will begin in her role as the director on Monday, April 22, 2019. The Human Resources Department Director is a direct report to the County Manager.   

Ms. Aponte has worked for Thurston County in the Human Resources Department since June 2006 serving as an HR analyst, senior HR analyst, HR manager, and then entered in her role as the interim director in December 2018. Prior to her employment with Thurston County, Ms. Aponte served as the senior board assistant for the Washington State Personnel Appeals Board. 

Ms. Aponte received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Washington, Tacoma and her Master of Business Administration from Saint Martin’s University. She has also received training from the National Public Employer Labor Relations Association and participated in the Labor Relations Institute through the Association of Washington Cities.  

“Ms. Aponte’s strong leadership skills and broad knowledge of human resources laws, labor relations, the bargaining units, and development of personnel policies will be a valuable asset to the county and the county’s leadership team,” said County Manager, Ramiro Chavez. “We are confident she will lead the department very effectively and move the county forward with innovative and cutting edge ideas.”
