Thurston County Accepting Grant Applications for Historic Preservation
Apply on or before August 30, 2019

OLYMPIA - Historic preservation organizations in Thurston County have an opportunity to apply for Heritage Grant Program grants from the county for historic preservation. The grants will be awarded in early 2020.

WHAT: 2020 Thurston County Heritage Grants
WHEN: Apply between July 15, 2019 to August 30, 2019
WHERE: Application is online or at the Thurston County Building Development Center

The Historic Preservation Grant program is funded by revenues the county collects from the recording of documents. By state law, these funds can only be used for programs and projects related to historic preservation. In addition to funding the grant program, the Thurston County Board of Commissioners authorized up to $10,000 annually for projects managed by the Thurston County Historic Commission. These funds are typically used for the creation of historic markers in the county and to help support efforts such as the historic barn documentation project

Last year, 11 grant applications were received and ranked by the Historic Commission for 2019 funding. On December 12, 2018, the Board of Commissioners approved funding for seven applications for a total of $32,000. Past grant supported projects include:

  • Transferring founding documents, photographs, etc. of the YMCA.
  • Deck repairs and dry rot replacement throughout the Sand Man tugboat.
  • Renovate and preserve the historic Rainier School and Lutheran Church.
  • Other historic projects within Thurston County.

Learn more about the Thurston County Historic Commission and the Heritage Grant Program online. Once all the applications are received, they will be reviewed by a sub-committee, and then by the entire Thurston County Historic Commission. The Thurston County Board of Commissioners will award the grants in early 2020.  Those with questions can call Cami Petersen, Administrative Assistant, Community Planning & Economic Department, at 360-867-2117.
