Applications must be received by August 31, 2022.
OLYMPIA – The application period for historic preservation organizations in Thurston County to apply for a Heritage Grant is now open. The application period for the 2023 Thurston County Heritage Grant Program runs from today, July 15 through August 31, 2022. The Thurston County Historic Commission grant sub-committee will begin their review in September.
The Heritage Grant Program is funded by revenues the county collects from the recording of documents. By state law, these funds can only be used for programs and projects related to historic preservation. In addition to funding the grant program, the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) has also authorized funding for projects managed by the County Historic Commission. These funds are typically used for the creation and maintenance of historic markers in the county, educational events and publications, and to support other community efforts.
Last year, the Historic Commission received and ranked six grant applications 2022 funding. The BoCC approved funding for all six applications, totaling $29,000. Past grants have funded projects including: the digitizing and publishing of images from the Lacey Leader, by the City of Lacey/Lacey Museum, the installation of the Howard Family Interpretive marker on East Bay Dr by the Olympia Arts and Heritage Alliance, the repair of the exterior stairs of the Bigelow House by the Olympia Historical Society & Bigelow House Museum, and other historic projects within Thurston County.
