Chehalis Basin Flood Authority Hosts Public Meetings

OLYMPIA – The Chehalis Basin Flood Authority is holding a series of public meetings the week of April 5. The meetings will focus on the draft Flood Plan which will be used to identify flood problems in the basin and suggest potential solutions. Those solutions could include structural approaches such as flood retention and smaller projects to address specific local problems as well as nonstructural approaches like regulatory revisions and improved flood warnings.

The Flood Authority is seeking public input specifically in the areas of:
  • Flood problem identification
  • Recommended actions
  • Other areas of public concern

Public comments will then be incorporated into a revised version of the Flood Plan which the Authority proposes to adopt in June. Thurston County Commissioner Karen Valenzuela, a member of the Authority, says it’s important for people to give their opinions. "This is an important issue for south Thurston County residents who've been affected in the past by flooding of the Chehalis River. It's still a draft plan, so we're very interested in peoples' feedback."

The Chehalis River Basin Flood Authority is charged with developing projects and studies to help protect citizens from flooding. The goal is a basin-wide package of cost-effective, long-term and environmentally responsible methods to protect natural resources, commercial industries, private property, and human life from flood impacts.

The public meetings will be held from 6:00-8:00pm on the following dates:
  • Monday, April 5th: at Swede Hall in Rochester
  • Tuesday, April 6th: at Montesano City Hall
  • Wednesday, April 7th: at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis

The members of the Flood Authority are:Grays Harbor County, Lewis County, Thurston County, The Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation, Aberdeen, Bucoda, Centralia, Chehalis, Montesano, Oakville, and Pe Ell.
