Public Invited to Hear Accountability and Restitution Center Report

OLYMPIA - A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 280, Building One, Thurston County Courthouse for Thurston County Commissioners and the Sheriff to hear a consultant's report regarding the county's Accountability and Restitution Center (ARC). MGT Correctional Services was hired this past spring to perform a detailed analysis of the unoccupied facility located in the Mottman Industrial area of Tumwater.

MGT of America is a national company recognized as an expert in the field of criminal justice systems and operations. The company, first chartered in 1974, assists public sector entities in operating more efficiently and effectively. MGT was selected in April to examine the entire Thurston County corrections system including the ARC and the current jail as well as budgeting, corrections staffing, inmate classification and more. Their report and recommendations are the subject of the public meeting.

Karen Valenzuela, Thurston County Commission Chair, says the review was paid for out of unused funds from the ARC construction project. "We agree with Sheriff John Snaza that it was time for an outside perspective on the ARC and a review of what it might take to staff and open the facility. While there are no guarantees that we will be able to afford to open the ARC, it is good to have this unbiased examination from a group that has no preconceived notions about the system."

The meeting will feature remarks and introductions from Commissioner Valenzuela followed by a presentation from Karl Becker, a senior partner with MGT of America. That may be followed by questions from the commissioners and/or Sheriff Snaza.

The Report and Recommendations will be posted to the Thurston County website (www.co.thurston.wa.us/arc) on October 19, 2011. The public is invited to comment via the website or by mail to the Board of Thurston County Commissioners, 2000 Lakeridge Dr. SW, Olympia, WA 98502 through November 18, 2011.

ARC Consultants's Report- Tuesday, October 18, 2011, 7:00- 9:00 p.m. in Room 280, Building One, Thurston County Courthouse.

The Thurston County Board of County Commissioners will deliberate on the consultant's findings and related public comment as part of their 2012 budget adoption process.
