Thurston County Historic Commission Preservation Grants


OLYMPIA – Historic preservation programs in Thurston County have been given a boost, thanks to grants authorized today (3-30-10) by the Board of County Commissioners. Funding for the grants comes under an enactment from the 2005 legislature that sets aside $1 from each $5 historic document recording fee collected by the county auditor. The grant program is managed by the Thurston County Historic Commission who set up the program this year at the request of the County Commissioners.

The Thurston County Historic Commission received a dozen applications for funding and awarded the grants listed below-
  • Bigelow House- Repair, restore & preserve historic windows, doors & shutters at the Bigelow House and create a program to help homeowners care for historic windows. $5,000
  • Crosby House Museum - Exterior painting of Crosby House and repairs. $5,000
  • Rainier Area Building Community- Renovation of one room in the 1915 Rainier Historic School. $5000
  • Sand Man Foundation- Electrical & Safety Improvements for Sand Man Tugboat. $3,442
  • Bucoda Community Foundation- Remodel Odd Fellows Hall. $5,000
  • Art Deco Society Northwest- Wash & prep west wall of the downtown Olympia Bus Depot and recreate historic wall sign advertisement. $5000
  • Washington State Historical Society/State Capital Museum- "From Parlor to Podium: Territorial Suffragists of Olympia" Exhibit Program. $2,350
  • Olympia Tumwater Foundation- Olympia Brewery/Schmidt Family Archive Education Project, $4,911
  • South Thurston County Historical Society- Preserving & Providing Accessibility to Tenino Depot Museum Photos. $5,000
  • Olympia High School Alumni Association- Historic Records Digitization. $4,989
  • Tumwater Historical Association- Acquire heritage attire for volunteers to wear at heritage events. $5000
  • Old Brewhouse Foundation- Tumwater Old Brewhouse Real Estate Appraisal, $5000


Funds from the Thurston County Historic Commission Program also go to help pay for staff. The grant awards will be done annually to help support the wide array of preservation programs in the county.-30-
