Toxic Blue Green Algae Advisory Issued for Long Lake.

OLYMPIA - People who live near Long Lake, or recreate there, are being advised of a toxic blue-green algae bloom in the Thurston County lake.

Samples taken last week contained levels of the algae toxin, microcystin, at concentrations above the recreational guidance value established by the Washington State Department of Health. An email notification was sent to lake residents and other interested citizens that recommends that they avoid recreational contact with the lake; keep pets and livestock away; clean fish well and discard the guts; and avoid areas of algae scum on the surface of the lake when boating.

The health advisory is posted online athttp://www.co.thurston.wa.us/health/ehadm/swimming/blue_green_algae.html.Advisory signs have been posted at public access points on the lake. The health department will continue to monitoring the lake until the algae bloom subsides. Two other lake advisories, issued in September, for Black and Pattison Lakes remain in effect.
