New Zealand Emergency Manager Speaks on Christchurch Earthquake, Oct. 27

Emergency Manager Jon Mitchell will discuss the recent Christchurch earthquake disaster and response on Thursday, October 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the Worthington Center at Saint Martin's University, 5300 Pacific Avenue in Lacey.

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Christchurch area on September 4, 2010 causing widespread damage in New Zealand's second largest city. As the city was still recovering from the earthquake, a massive 6.3 aftershock struck on February 22, killing 180 people, injuring hundreds and devastating the business district. Mitchell, the incident commander for the events, will explain why the smaller quake caused more damage. He'll also discuss how response and recovery lessons learned in the quake response and recovery can be applied to reduce our risks in the Cascadia Earthquake Region of the Pacific Northwest. The free 7:00-8:30 event is sponsored by the Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup, Thurston County Emergency Management.
