Toxic Blue Green Algae Advisory Issued for Offut Lake.

OLYMPIA - A Toxic Blue-green Algae Advisory has been issued for Offut Lake in Thurston County. A sample taken last week at the public boat launch contained a very high level of thealgae toxin, microcystin, well above the recreational guidance value established by the Washington State Dept of Health. The Health Department advises citizens to avoid recreational contact with the lake; prevent pets and livestock from drinking lake water; clean fish well and discard the guts; and avoid areas of scum when boating.

The advisory is posted online athttp://www.co.thurston.wa.us/health/ehadm/swimming/blue_green_algae.html.Advisory signs have been posted at the public boat launch. The lake will be monitored to determine when the toxic algae bloom is over and the advisory can be lifted. Toxin levels at Black, Long, Pattison, and St. Clair Lakes have been decreasing but the advisories remain in effect at those locations until the bloom dissipates.
