Respite Shelters Opening for Families Impacted by the Winter Storm

In response to freezing temperatures and widespread power outages caused by falling trees and limbs, the First Christian Church in Olympia is opening a respite shelter. The temporary shelter is being run in cooperation with the Mount Rainier Chapter of the American Red Cross. The respite shelter is located at 701 Franklin Street SE in downtown Olympia. Those who wish to use the shelter to warm up are invited to stop by. They can also stay all night but will have to bring their own supplies.

Those supplies could include the following:
  • Blankets, sleeping bags, sleeping pads and pillows
  • Toiletries (toothpaste, personal hygiene items, and medications)
  • Extra clothing, towels, and washcloths
  • Comfort items for children (stuffed animals, toys, games, books, and blanket)

The First Christian Church shelter is set to open at 7PM (Thursday, January 19th).

A similar respite shelter is being run by the McLane Fire District at Station 91 located at 125 Delphi Road NW.

Residents needing more information should call Thurston County Emergency Management at 360-754-3360.
