Thurston Commissioner Romero Appointed to Statewide Committee

OLYMPIA - Thurston County Commissioner Sandra Romero has been appointed as a member of a new advisory committee that serves the State Conservation Commission. Romero was nominated for the Voluntary Stewardship Program (VSP) committee by the Washington State Association of Counties.

As created by the state legislature, the Voluntary Stewardship Program has several important goals including-
  • Protecting critical areas and also the viability of working agricultural lands.
  • Getting local governments and landowners out of frequent and costly litigation.
  • Retaining local control and grass roots level planning.
  • Achieving better and more strategic environmental outcomes with existing working agricultural lands.

Commissioner Romero says she is pleased to be able to serve on the VSP committee. "Local governments like Thurston County must reach out to farmers and work with them. This kind of partnership can provide resources and incentives for agricultural land owners while helping to provide much needed protections for critical areas, fish and wildlife and the environment that we all love so much. And we can do it in a cooperative manner rather than an adversarial one."

Thurston County opted to participate in the VSP on January 12th of this year joining 27 other counties who have done the same. Other partners in the Voluntary Stewardship Program include the State Departments of Fish and Wildlife, Agriculture and Ecology and the Conservation Commission. The VSP Program was the culmination of three years of intensive negotiation and is recognized nationally as a unique approach to resolving issues of resource protection and agricultural sustainability.

Romero will serve a term of two years on the VSP Advisory Committee starting the 15th of this month.
