Don't push your Luck on St. Patrick's Day: DUI Patrols in Thurston County

Thurston County, WA- Everyone may be "Irish" this St. Patrick's Day as they celebrate Ireland's patron saint, but no one should drive after drinking. All city, county, and State Patrol law enforcement agencies will participate in DUI patrols in Thurston County March 16th-19th, 2012 in an effort to prevent serious injuries and fatalities. Law enforcement officials from the Sheriff's Office and local Police Departments will also visit restaurants and bars March 17th, in hopes of preventing people from driving impaired.

This emphasis patrol is sponsored by Target Zero Thurston and funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC). These efforts are taking place statewide to prevent alcohol related collisions.

The best way to not get caught is to do the following:
  • Take a cab
  • Use a designated, sober driver
  • Make other arrangements to get home safely

Participating agencies include the Washington State Patrol, Thurston County Sheriff's Office, the Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, Tenino and Yelm Police Departments and the Chehalis and Nisqually Tribal law enforcement officers.

"Thurston County has already seen five fatalities this year from preventable circumstances; we just want people to make good decisions and drive safe and sober." says Brittany Sill, Target Zero Manager for Thurston County.

Law enforcement officers encourage drivers to call 911 if they see someone who may be driving impaired. Be smart and drive safely this St. Patrick's Day.
