Make It Through Campaign Begins April 9

Make a plan, build a kit and help each other. Those are the three most important actions people can take to prepare for a catastrophe. That message and other preparedness tips will be broadcast through a variety of media beginning on Monday, April 9.

The Make it Through campaign, supported by the Puget Sound Offices of Emergency Management, stresses the following preparedness points:

  • Preparing for three days will help you make it through many of the disasters you’ll face in the Puget Sound region, including major storms and even small earthquakes. However, to make it through a major catastrophe, like the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, you'll need to be prepared for longer-at least seven to 10 days.
  • Have an emergency plan with meeting places and an out of area contact.
  • Prepare a supply kit that includes prescription medications, flashlight, battery-powered radio, extra batteries, first aid kit, non-perishable food, and water-one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation.
  • Be prepared to help each other. Take a first aid class, plan ahead with your neighbors, co-workers and friends so that you're ready to take care of each other immediately following the event.

More details are available at the campaign website, www.makeitthrough.org The site includes video stories with catastrophe survivors, emergency kit checklists and contact cards, a training event calendar and much more.
