The Heat is on as the Summer Begins

Thurston Co. WA - Thurston County ranks impaired driving as the number one priority on which to focus efforts of prevention and enforcement. Target Zero Task Force officers will patrol Thurston County in areas that have high fatality and serious injury crash rates. The Task Force will carry out this campaign from June 23rd - July 6th.

Law enforcement from the Thurston County Sheriff's Office, Olympia Police Department(PD), Lacey PD, Tumwater PD, Chehalis Tribal PD, Tenino PD, Yelm PD and Washington State Patrol will take part in the patrols. The campaign is funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission in the effort to reach ZERO deaths and serious injury by 2030.

"The goal of Target Zero is to reach ZERO. No one should be killed or injured from these preventable acts. You are in control, choose to drive sober." says Brittany Sill, Target Zero Manager for Thurston County.

Impaired driving continues to be a problem in Washington.
  • Alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes was four times higher at night than during the day (37% versus 9%).
  • Of the 11 fatal collisions in Thurston County for 2012, over 50% are presumed to have involved alcohol or drugs.
  • Have a plan- take a taxi or call a sober driver.
