Local Officials to Commemorate Yelm Highway Improvement Project

Thurston County commissioners and Olympia Mayor Stephen Buxbaum will celebrate completion of the Yelm Highway Improvement Project on Thursday, September 6 at 3:00 p.m. The ceremony takes place on City of Olympia property across from Brassfield Drive on Yelm Highway about a half-mile east from Henderson Boulevard.

Commission Chair Cathy Wolfe, Mayor Buxbaum and other local officials will speak about the road improvements and utility upgrades which took place on and along Yelm Highway between Henderson Boulevard and Rich Road (approximately 1.25 miles).

The project completed a regional east-west corridor connecting the urban areas of Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, and Thurston County. The project, which began in the spring of 2010 and concluded this summer, created two travel lanes in each direction for the entire length of the corridor and added sidewalks and bike lanes. Two roundabouts, one at Boulevard Road and one at Brassfield Drive, were also constructed. The City of Olympia partnered with Thurston County on this project to upgrade sewer and water utilities and their portion of the road.

The $12 million project was funded from several sources: State Transportation Improvement Board, $3.9 million; Thurston County Roads Fund, $1.1 million; federal funds, $1.6 million; City of Olympia, $4.8 million; County Mitigation fund, $444,000, and Intercity Transit, $15,000.

The September 6 ceremony is free and open to the public.
