Public Hearing Before Olympia/County Planning Commissions


OLYMPIA -- The Thurston County Planning Commission and Olympia Planning Commission will hold a joint Public Hearing on October 10th. The purpose of the hearing is to accept public comment on proposed amendments to the Comprehensive Plan for the City of Olympia and the Olympia Urban Growth Area affecting properties in the unincorporated Olympia Urban Growth Area (UGA).

The Comprehensive Plan for the City of Olympia and the Olympia Urban Growth Area is adopted by Thurston County as the joint comprehensive plan for the unincorporated portion of the Olympia UGA. The Planning Commission(s) may hold a work session or act on the proposals at the close of the hearing. For land use plan and rezoning amendments, the Planning Commission(s) may recommend a different land use designation and zoning district than indicated. The Planning Commissions will make separate recommendations.

Olympia UGA Resizing and Land Use Analysis French Road. A proposed land use plan and rezoning amendment for two areas in the City of Olympia UGA.

  • The French Loop/Road and Butler Cove study area includes 376 acres generally located in the northwest corner of the Olympia UGA. Properties in the French Loop/Road and Butler Cove study area may be removed from the Urban Growth Area and reclassified, and or reclassified to a lower intensity land use designation/zoning district. These include but are not limited to Residential 4 Units per Acre, Residential Low Impact 2-4 Units per Acre, Residential 1/5, Rural Residential/Resource One Unit per Five Acres, and Residential LAMIRD 1/1 or 1/2. The property is south of the northern Olympia UGA Boundary at approximately 135 ft. north of the intersection of Cooper Pt. Rd. NW and 33rd Ln. NW, along French Road NW, and Butler Creek; east of Cooper Pt. Rd NW.; north of 28th Ave NW; north of 26th Ave. NW; and west of Budd Inlet. A portion of the study area lies within 300 ft. west of Cooper Pt. Rd. NW, north of 28th Ave. NW to the UGA boundary approximately 135 feet north of 33rd Ln. NW.
  • The Chambers South Olympia study area includes 76 acres generally located south of Wiggins Rd. SE and 40th Ave. SE. In the Chambers/South Olympia study area, properties may be reclassified to a lower intensity land use designation/zoning district. These include but are not limited to Residential 4 Units per Acre, Residential Low Impact 2-4 Units per Acre, Residential One Unit per Five Acres, or including the Residential 4 Units per Acre - Chambers Basin zone from the City of Olympia Zoning Ordinance in the Thurston County Code, and applying it to the study area.


Medela Land Use Plan Amendment. A proposed land use plan and rezoning amendment proposed by Ron Niemi, Woodard Bay Works, Inc. and Melvin Armstrong, Medela Group LLC to reclassify 9.01 acres. The property affected by this proposal is located at 9th Avenue SE and Chambers Street SE, Olympia, approximately 300 feet east of Boulevard Road SE. The land use designation for the property is proposed to change from Residential 4 to 8 units per acre (R 4-8) to Residential Multi-Family 18 (RM-18).

The public hearing will begin at 7:00 pm October 10th at the Thurston County Courthouse Complex, 2000 Lakeridge Dr. SW, Olympia, WA 98502 in Room 152. Written comments may be submitted in lieu of testimony. Please submit written testimony to Thurston County Planning, Attention: Jeremy Davis, until 4:00 P.M. on the 10th.
