Thurston Commission Holds Hearings on County Plans and Codes


OLYMPIA -- The Board of Thurston County Commissioners will hold two public hearings on November 14, 2012 regarding proposed changes to the county's comprehensive plan and county codes. The purpose of the hearing is to accept public comment on the draft regulations relating to the designation of new mineral lands of long-term commercial significance as required by the Growth Management Hearings Board Compliance Order. The proposed changes include:
  • Thurston County Comprehensive Plan: Amending the designation criteria in Chapter 3 Natural Resources for Mineral Lands of Long Term Commercial Significance, and other related amendments.
  • Title 20, Zoning: Amending Chapter 20.30B Designated Mineral Lands to amend the designation criteria and for other related amendments to ensure consistency with the Thurston County Comprehensive Plan.

The areas proposed to be amended include: the co-designation of forest and mineral lands, and critical areas. All of the designation criteria for mineral lands of long term commercial significance are subject to comment and change. The purpose of the second hearing is to accept public comment on a proposed amendment to the Thurston County Comprehensive Plan to add a public health chapter. The new chapter may include avision, values, goals, policies, a summary of the relationship with other elements of the Comprehensive Plan, planning for public health, interactions between the built environment andpublic health, and the background and context.
