County Auditor to Issue Marriage Licenses at Midnight Dec. 6
OLYMPIA -- Thurston County Auditor Kim Wyman announced plans for handling the wave of marriage license applications anticipated next week when state law changes to allow same gender couples to marry.
"We anticipate hundreds of people will come to the county courthouse on December 6 to commemorate this historic event," Wyman said, "so we are extending our office hours on Thursday and Friday to give our customers additional time to get their licenses."
The Thurston County Auditor's Office will be open extended hours on Thursday, December 6 from 7a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Friday, December 7 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accommodate the expected rush on marriage licenses.
"We have had a few requests to be the first couple issued a license, and in an attempt to be fair, we have decided to issue 10 licenses right after the law goes into effect at midnight on Thursday, December 6," Wyman added. "We will have a random drawing for these couples on Monday, December 3 at 1 p.m."
Couples interested in submitting their names for the random drawing should email Heather Hirotaka at firstname.lastname@example.org
. Couples are asked to submit their names and a contact phone number by noon on Monday, December 3.
Couples who want to obtain a marriage license need to be at least 18 years of age and plan to wed between December 9, 2012 and February 6, 2013. For more details and instructions for the online and in-person portions of the marriage license application, visit www.co.thurston.wa.us/auditor
