Youth Can Earn Recognition for Reducing, Reusing, & Recycling

Thurston County Solid Waste has developed a patch that youth can earn by practicing the 3 R's. The Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Patch program teaches youth to prevent and reduce waste and take better care of their environment. After completing activities and action projects, they can fill out a Patch Requirement Sheet. In return, we will send free patches to an individual or group.

We have even more opportunities for youth in organizations, such as scouts or 4-H, to earn badges, patches, pins, and service hours. If a youth group can earn recognition from their own organization for focusing on recycling and waste reduction, we can help! We offer presentations that show you:
  • What you can recycle in your community.
  • How you can reduce waste at home.
  • Where your garbage goes.

Waste reduction staff also provides opportunities for youth to teach others. Youth can work alongside Master Recycler Composter volunteers or outreach staff and "learn by doing." One example activity is to show people how to sort their waste and recycling at a public event like the Thurston County Fair.

For more information about any of these opportunities, please visit our website at www.ThurstonSolidWaste.org/youth or contact Colleen Minion at (360) 867-2280 or minionc@co.thurston.wa.us
