Feb. 18 Hearing on New Land Use Code Enforcement Title
New title will consolidate land use code enforcement rules in one place

The Thurston County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, February 18 to take public testimony on the creation of a new land use code enforcement title in the County Code. The new Title 26-Code Enforcement consolidates land use code enforcement regulations from thirteen chapters into one. If adopted, the new title will regulate land use code enforcement throughout unincorporated Thurston County.

The public is invited to participate in informed discussion, and testimony will be accepted at the February 18 hearing.

At the direction of the Board of County Commissioners, staff reviewed and re-wrote the county's land use code enforcement regulations to improve enforcement efficiency and effectiveness. County staffers then presented a draft to the Thurston County Planning Commission in September 2013. In addition to consolidating the various enforcement codes, the draft proposed some new compliance actions, including the ability to issue civil penalty tickets. The Planning Commission then held a public hearing on the draft in October 2013 and followed that with a written recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners to adopt Title 26-Code Enforcement.

In December 2013, the county commissioners held a briefing during which some changes to the Planning Commission draft were recommended. The Board of County Commissioners is now accepting public comment on the revised draft until the close of the public hearing on Tuesday, February 18.

For those unable to attend the hearing to testify, written comments will be accepted up to the close of the public hearing on Tuesday. Written comments can be emailed to Resource Stewardship Department Planning Manager Mike Kain at KainM@co.thurston.wa.us, or mailed to Thurston County Resource Stewardship Department, 2000 Lakeridge Drive SW, Olympia, WA 98502. A copy of the draft is available at the County Courthouse between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on business days.
