Sustainable urban homestead tour set for Aug. 7
Seven local gardens will open their gates to reveal working examples of urban farming and sustainable living on Saturday, Aug. 7 during a free Sustainable Homestead Tour. The tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a community potluck celebration at the Wendell Berry Community Garden on Olympia's eastside from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.###
Highlights of the tour include chickens, compost systems, solar panels, vegetable gardens, and nut and fruit trees. Attend the tour and learn about seed saving, rainwater catchment systems, small-scale bee tending, and how to share large projects with neighbors and community members.
The tour is free of charge and includes seven sites across Olympia. For a map of the tour and potluck, and to register online, visit www.sustainsouthsound.org or call 943-4596.
The event is the first annual Sustainable Homestead Tour organized by Sustainable South Sound, a nonprofit group that works to create a sustainable, hunger free, healthy and resilient community.
