Traffic Alert: WSDOT Work Near County Courthouse This Month
Construction on I-5, Highway 101 will impact county courthouse visitors

Road crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation will be hard at work in September on sections of Interstate 5 and US Highway 101 next to Capitol Lake, which means drivers headed to and from the Thurston County Courthouse campus may experience some traffic delays and congestion on Friday, September 12 and Friday, September 19.

Many residents access the Thurston County Courthouse by using the I-5/US 101 interchange, so drivers who are visiting the courthouse campus on Friday, September 12 and Friday, September 19 should be prepared to use alternate routes to avoid any traffic back-ups that may occur. Over those two weekends, WSDOT crews will repair an expansion joint that spans all northbound and southbound lanes on I-5 right next to the interchange with US 101, and the work will impact traffic on I-5, US 101, and some highway and interstate on- and off-ramps.

Local streets are also expected to see big increases in traffic volumes that may also cause delays, so drivers in the area are asked to pack their patience and avoid peak traffic times on those two Fridays if possible.

Some construction work in the I-5/US 101 interchange area will begin late tonight, so courthouse visitors should be prepared to monitor traffic conditions and find alternate routes to avoid possible traffic congestion starting this week.

Some of the scheduled closures in the next two weeks include:
  • I-5 on-ramp at Deschutes Way Southwest starting Sept. 3— the Deschutes Way Southwest on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5 will close between 10 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3 through 5 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, and again starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday, September 4 and through the weekend until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 8. The ramp will also close the following weekend, starting at 10 p.m. Thursday, September 11 through 5 a.m. Monday, September 15. The Deschutes Way Southwest ramp closures may affect drivers leaving the county courthouse, and courthouse visitors who plan to head north on those days are encouraged to find alternate routes.

  • Lane closures on I-5 and U.S. 101 starting Sept. 11— starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, crews will begin closing some lanes and shifting or reducing other lanes in both directions on I-5 and on U.S. 101 near Capitol Lake. Traffic delays and back-ups are expected throughout the lane-closure period from 10 p.m. Thursday, September 11 through 5 a.m. Monday, September 15. Courthouse visitors are encouraged to avoid the area if possible and find alternate routes to and from the courthouse on Friday, September 12.

  • Henderson Boulevard & 14th Street on-ramp starting Sept. 12—The Henderson Boulevard/14th Street on-ramp that leads to southbound I-5 and to northbound U.S. 101 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, September 12 to 5 a.m. Monday, September 15. Because of the lane closures near the on-ramp that begin the night before, courthouse visitors are encouraged to avoid the area if possible and find alternate routes to the courthouse on Friday, September 12.

More ramp and lane closures on I-5 and U.S. 101 are scheduled between Thursday, September 18 and Monday, September 22. The weekend of September 26 is reserved as an alternate construction period if weather conditions delay the construction work.
