OLYMPIA -Thurston County Commissioners today (1-12-2015) met with Sheriff John Snaza as part of the ongoing talks aimed at opening the Accountability and Restitution Center (ARC) in the Mottman Industrial area of Tumwater.-30-
Budget officials from the Commissioner's and the Sheriff's Offices have been scrubbing the numbers and building an ARC budget from a zero base. The goal is to create a spending proposal that ensures all the necessary costs of opening and running the ARC are covered. There was optimism after the meeting that a mutually acceptable approach can be reached and officials agreed to meet again, perhaps as early as next week, to continue the conversation.
County Commission Chair Cathy Wolfe says continued discussion of the situation will hopefully lead to a satisfactory conclusion.
"It's in everyone's best interest to get the ARC open and to move inmates out of a jail space in the courthouse that has outlived its usefulness. It's up to us to find some common ground and the basis for an agreement that will allow that to happen."
Sheriff John Snaza says it's good to work for a solution that balances finances with operations of the jail. "It is our intention to continue working toward a resolution in occupying the new jail without jeopardizing the safety of our staff or inmates. We want to ensure we are finding better ways to be fiscally accountable at all times."
