Heavy Rain Closes Roads in South County
Watch for flooded roads, increased landslide risk as rain continues this week

Three roads in south Thurston County are closed today due to water over the roadways. With more rain headed for Western Washington this week, drivers are reminded to use caution and not to drive on any flooded roads, even if there are no "Road Closed" signs posted:
  • 188th Avenue SW at the casino
  • Anderson Road SW between Highway 12 and McCormick Road SW
  • Moon Road SW between Highway 12 and 188th Avenue SW

"There are signs posted at these three locations, but it's critical that drivers out there stay safe and avoid all flooded roads, even if they don't see any signs or barricades," says Lucy Mills, Road Operations Manager for Thurston County Public Works.

The recent heavy rains also have county officials on alert for increased landslide risk. Recent rain combined with heavy rain earlier this season has saturated the ground in many areas, which increases the risk of landslides.

Thurston County Emergency Manager Sandy Johnson encourages all county residents to be familiar with the typical landslide warning signs to protect both people and property from harm. Johnson points to a brochure from the Washington Department of Natural Resources as a quick and easy way to familiarize yourself with landslide risks and warning signs. "We don't have any reports of new or active landslides right now, but it's important that all of our residents are aware of the risk and that they know the warning signs of a landslide," said Johnson.

To view the brochure and other landslide information, go to www.dnr.wa.gov/geology and click on the "Landslides" link under the "Hazards Geology" heading.

All further road updates will be posted on the Thurston County Public Works website at www.co.thurston.wa.us/publicworks. County residents are encouraged to check the website for further updates, or follow the Public Works Department on Twitter for road closure updates as they're posted, plus other county road information.
