Public Invited to Attend Voter Accessibility Meeting
Elections Division seeks input to make voting easier for the disabled

OLYMPIA – Thurston County Elections invites citizens to attend the Voter Accessibility Advisory Committee (VAAC) meeting from 2 – 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4. This meeting will be held in the Public Meeting Room of the Thurston County Courthouse, located at 2000 Lakeridge Drive SW, Building 1 Room 152, in Olympia.

VAAC is a federally mandated committee that advises the Auditor's Office on ways to increase voter access to voting information and programs. The committee is made up of representatives with visual and hearing impairments; physical and developmental disabilities; and individuals who provide services to the disabled.

Currently, Thurston County Elections' accessibility programs include the use of the AutoMARK™ voting assistance device, availability of voting information in audio format, and public service announcements.

"Casting a vote independently and secretly should never be restricted," said Thurston County Auditor Mary Hall. "It's critical to the process and spirit of open and free elections to ensure that everyone, regardless of disability, has the opportunity to speak their voice on Election Day. I'm hopeful that interested citizens attend this meeting and offer their ideas."
