Thurston Commissioners Approve Rainier Water Franchise
Franchise allows for construction of a water main in the county

OLYMPIA - Thurston County Commissioners this week approved a new franchise for water services for the city of Rainier. The franchise allows the city to use county rights of way to construct, operate and maintain a water distribution system.

Rainier Mayor Randy Schleis says the city can now install an 8-inch water line on the north side of 133rd street within the county. "This allows us to connect and loop existing water lines and that provides service redundancy for future development in the northern part of the city." No water service is planned for the areas outside of the city limits.

The Rainier water system franchise approval comes after Commissioners held a public hearing on the issue at Rainier City Hall on March 17. The visit to Rainier allowed commissioners to discuss the issue with Rainier staff and city residents. County Commissioner Sandra Romero says such visits are very valuable.

"Going out to the areas of impact allows us to hear directly from those affected by the plans. In addition, it makes it easier for area residents to attend the hearing, since they don't have to travel to Olympia."

The City applied for the water service franchise late last year.
