Thurston Commissioners May Adopt Revisions to Marijuana Ordinance
Suggested changes come after Public Hearing

OLYMPIA - Thurston County Commissioners, at their July 7 meeting, will consider changes to the county's interim regulations for growing and processing marijuana. Under consideration will be suggestions that have come from community members and after Commissioners' deliberations with staff.

A hearing was held recently on proposed amendments to interim regulations governing state-licensed marijuana producers, processors and retailers authorized by Chapter 69.50 RCW.

The suggested revisions include-

1.Requiring greater than five acres for marijuana operations in residential zones
2.Requiring marijuana operations to be a minimum of 100 feet from the property line in residential zones
3.Requiring marijuana operations within non-residential zones to be at least 100 feet from a residential zone boundary
4.Eliminating the setback exemption for existing buildings used for marijuana operations
5.Disallowing any marijuana operations within the Long Term Agriculture, Nisqually Agriculture and Agricultural District zones
6.Commissioners may also set an effective date for the amended ordinance of July 7 for new marijuana related applications. Applications submitted after that date would be subject to the new rules.

Those seeking more information about the proposed revisions should contact Mike Kain at 360-754-3355, x5471 or by email at kainm@co.thurston.wa.us Hard copies of referenced documents are available at the Thurston County Resource Stewardship Department, Permit Assistance Center, 2000 Lakeridge Drive SE, Olympia, Washington and online at the Thurston County Planning Department Website www.thurstonplanning.org.
