Are you an aspiring artist? Showcase your artistic ability and enter the Thurston County Art Contest! The contest is open to all ages, all talent levels, and all mediums.
The theme for the contest is, “Homegrown and Handmade.” Whether it's the landscapes, landmarks, people, culture, or unique experiences, participants are encouraged to reflect on the elements that evoke a sense of belonging and connection to this vibrant community. Celebrate and showcase the diverse aspects of Thurston County that resonate with you personally, fostering a deeper appreciation for our shared home.
All mediums are accepted, including:
- Paintings
- Drawings
- Recordings of your music or dancing (Please email artcontest@co.thurston.wa.us to let us know the format of your recording (example: vinyl record, CD, USB, etc. so we can confirm we have a player available).
- Prints
- Mixed media
- Digital art (must be printed)
- Photography
- Sculpture
- Fabric & Fiber Arts
Artwork submissions are to be dropped off the week of May 27 – May 30 at the Atrium, located 3000 Pacific Ave SE, Olympia 98501 or one of the other drop-off locations. Please print and complete the submission form, and bring with your artwork.
The submissions will be judged by the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners, staff and "People's Choice" Facebook voting from June 9 - 12.
The winners will be announced in June. Winning artwork may be featured at county offices for public viewing.

Yes, the theme for this contest is "Homegrown and Handmade." We invite artists to explore and highlight local crafts, community, or agriculture. This theme provides an opportunity for artists to celebrate and showcase the diverse aspects of Thurston County that resonate with them personally, fostering a deeper appreciation for our shared home.
Drop off your painting, photo, sculpture, etc.. to our office at the Atrium between Tuesday, May 27 and Friday, May 30 during business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The Atrium is located at 3000 Pacific Ave SE, Olympia 98501. Please complete, print, and turn in the submission form when you drop off your artwork.
You may enter up to three works of art, however, each submission must have a separate submission form. For example, you may submit a photo and submit a sculpture separately.
The deadline to submit and drop off your artwork is Friday, May 30 before the office closes at 5 p.m.
There are two age categories: (0 - 17) and 18+, with winners in each category.
The other categories are County Employees, County Staff Choice, and Public Choice (a voting competition that will occur on the Thurston County Facebook page in June).
The submissions will be judged by the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners. The winners are anticipated to be announced at our June 17 Board of County Commissioners Business meeting. All winners will be notified by phone or e-mail.
No, entry into the art contest is free.

Winners will receive a certificate and the opportunity to have their artwork be featured at county offices for public viewing.
The art contest is open to all residents within Thurston County, including but not limited to community members, professionals, hobbyists, children, and college students. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just discovering your passion for creativity, we welcome individuals from all walks of life to participate and showcase their talent. Thurston County employees that live outside of the county are still welcome to participate.
We encourage diversity and creativity in artistic expression. Entries can include, but not limited to:
- Painting (oil, acrylic, watercolor, etc.)
- Drawing (pencil, charcoal, pastels, etc.)
- Sculpture
- Photography
- Mixed media
- Digital art (must be printed)

No, there are no specific size or dimension requirements for artwork submissions. Please make sure your artwork is suitable for display and transportation, as oversized or heavy pieces may pose logistical challenges. Yes. After the winners have been announced, please pick up your artwork by June 27. Detailed instructions for artwork pick up will be provided to all participants following the announcement of winners. If you need to make special arrangements regarding artwork pickup, contact artcontest@co.thurston.wa.us.
Please do not to submit artwork containing sensitive, mature content, or political statements. As this contest is open to all age groups, we strive to maintain a family-friendly environment and ensure all artworks are suitable for viewers of varying ages. We encourage artists to explore a wide range of themes and concepts within the bounds of appropriateness for our diverse audience.
