Thurston County Sheriff’s Office Community Services Unit (CSU) volunteers provide a broad source of expertise, talent, and people power for the Sheriff’s Office and our community. This team provides a number of services and outreach programs that would otherwise require a fully commissioned Deputy, allowing them to focus on higher priority activities and freeing up valuable resources for the community.

CSU Volunteers are asked to donate 4 hours per week or more. The typical day for a volunteer could include:

  • Vacation House Checks
  • Business Checks
  • Handicap Parking Violations
  • Iris Scan
  • Traffic control at special events
  • Speaking engagements
  • Multi-Housing/Block Watch
  • Other duties as assigned

Each volunteer is provided with a uniform and the necessary training and equipment to safely perform their assigned duties.

After a probationary period and upon the recommendation of the CSU Command Staff, the volunteer will be sworn in by the Sheriff. This special commission enables them to enforce Washington State Disabled Parking Laws in accordance with RCW 46.19.050 §10
