Martin Luther King Jr. Day - Monday, January 19

County facilities will be closed on Monday, January 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The content on the Thurston County website is currently provided in English. We are providing the “Translation” for approximately 10 languages. The goal of the translation is to provide visitors with limited English proficiency to access information on the website in other languages. The translations do not translate all types of documents, and it may not give you an exact translation all the time. The translations are made through an automated process, which may not result in accurate or precise translations, particularly of technical and legal terminology.

Registration Required: Call to see if your septic system qualifies and to register at the Environmental Health O&M program at 360-867-2626. Deadline to sign up for a class is the Monday prior to the class you are wanting to attend.

Certification Qualifications & Eligibility:

  1. Must have one of the following septic system types:
    1. Conventional Gravity
    2. Pressure Distribution
    3. Mound
  2. Access to a computer to view videos and submit an inspection report online.
  3. Your septic system must have at least one inspection on file from a certified septic professional. Check your septic history at OnlineRME.com. For older septic systems, please reach out to Thurston County staff: 360-867-2626
  4. Starting January 1, 2026, all self-inspectors must obtain a satisfactory inspection report from a Thurston County certified septic professional every 9 years. 

Online Videos and In-Person Workshop including Field Test Review & Training

When: The workshop is offered twice a month

Where:  In-Person Training at the Thurston County Public Health and Social Services Building, (near St. Peter's Hospital)

NOTE: The field portion of the class is outside, please dress accordingly and bring an umbrella.

Attendees will receive:

  • Copy of septic records
  • Class handouts
  • Certification to inspect your septic system.
  • $10 off next septic tank pump-out
  • $200 riser rebate(s)

Be Aware: Working around open septic tanks and sewage can lead to illness, injury, and death. If you become a certified self-inspector, you are taking on the responsibility of inspecting your septic system, and you accept the health and safety risks involved. This class will show you the steps and personal protective equipment you must use to stay safe during your inspection.
