Bronka Sundstom after cutting the ribbon to her bench along the Chehalis Western Trail

At Chambers Lake Overlook, nestled within the scenic Chehalis Western Trail (CWT), community members and Thurston County Parks & Trails staff unveiled a tribute to Bronka Sundstrom, a Holocaust survivor and a true embodiment of resilience. Born in Poland in 1926, Sundstrom faced the horrors of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen as a teenager. She later immigrated to the United States, leaving a distinctive mark on the Pacific Northwest through her enduring spirit and love for the outdoors.

Sundstrom's zest for life found a unique expression when, at the age of 77, she successfully scaled Mount Rainier, becoming the oldest woman to do so at the time. This feat represented an incredible personal achievement and a symbol of Sundstrom's unwavering determination, demonstrating that age is merely a number when pitted against tenacity.

A newly dedicated bench at Chambers Lake Overlook on the CWT is now a testament to Sundstrom's extraordinary journey. This place of rest, amidst the tranquility of nature, captures the essence of Sundstrom - her strength, resilience, and unyielding passion for the natural world. It serves as a physical rest stop for travelers and a symbolic reminder of Sundstrom’s indomitable spirit.

As visitors rest on this bench, taking in the beauty of Chambers Lake, they are invited to reflect upon Sundstrom's life, her triumph over adversity, and her fervor for life. Through this tribute, her legacy continues to inspire, motivating everyone to face life's challenges with courage and, as Bronka says, to "Never give up, always go forward."

The county’s Parks and Trails program is responsible for stewardship of the county’s 2,578 acres of park lands and 56 miles of trails. Thurston County Parks include Burfoot, Frye Cove, Kenneydell, and Deschutes Falls. Trails managed in Thurston County include the Chehalis Western, Yelm-Rainier-Tenino, Gate-Belmore, and Ralph Munro. These public spaces, like the CWT, where Sundstrom's tribute is located, represent the county's dedication to preserving and celebrating the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

At the Holocaust Center for Humanity website, read more of Bronka’s story and hear her speak about her life experiences.
