Public Works ADA Plan

​Construction is scheduled to start February 28th at several intersections along Martin Way SE. Crews are improving curb ramps at the crossings on Kingham St. SE and Kinwood St. SE. This project is part of a county wide ADA Transition Plan to make it easier for people living with disabilities to get around Thurston County. ADA refers to the Americans with Disabilities Act which provides guidelines for accessibility.

Projects like this are scheduled each year according to their rank for heaviest use and location along busy roadways among other factors. From Feb 11th to March 11th Thurston County Public Works is accepting comments and feedback on their ADA Transition Plan. Besides curb ramps, this plan is in place to improve Public Works policies and procedures, road standards, and other roadway features such as sidewalks and signals for people of all abilities. It shows improvements which have been made, places needing further improvements and outlines a timeline for future projects. 

Areas for improvement outlined in the new plan include: 

  • How we respond to requests 
  • Operation and design of traffic signals 
  • Updating ADA standards for county roads 
  • Adding curb ramps, sidewalks, and pedestrian features to road standards 
  • Updating 1,862 curb ramps and 161,017 feet of sidewalk 

This questionnaire features a map where you can mark a location to tell us what concerns or challenges exist there. County sidewalks are labelled for you to separate them from city or state owned and maintained sidewalks. There are also questions about our ranking process to help us ensure that the criteria we use to rank projects seems appropriate to you.

Completing these improvements will be an ongoing effort well into the future. With the funding we currently have available, projects are done an intersection at a time. ADA improvements along the County owned portion of Martin Way will not be completed until 2027.
