​OLYMPIA – Property owners along shorelines in Thurston County are invited to a Shoreline Master Program (SMP) virtual open house beginning today (August 13, 2021). The SMP virtual open house will provide residents with information on proposed changes to the Shoreline Master Program.

The SMP regulates development and redevelopment along the shorelines of Puget Sound as well as large lakes and streams. The open house will be available online for at least four weeks, allowing participants time to interact with proposed updates and provide feedback.

Public input is welcome and will continue to shape the draft SMP. Depending on your plans for development, SMP updates may affect your property. Join the SMP virtual open house to learn more, interact with maps and other tools explaining the changes, submit questions, provide comment, and be involved!

Thurston County is conducting a comprehensive update of its SMP as required by state law. The update also includes items required by the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) in what is referred to as the periodic update.

Both the Thurston County Planning Commission and Board of County Commissioners will hold public hearings on the SMP in the coming months. The updated SMP must be approved by Ecology before being finalized and implemented.
