OLYMPIA - Falling leaves signal the return of autumn rains. Big accumulations of fallen leaves can be a nuisance, but they can also be quite useful. This fall, as you rake up leaves on your lawn, try putting them around trees and shrubs. They'll help protect your plants from the cold winter and provide nutrients to the soil around your plants as they decompose. -30-
And while you have your rake out, check nearby storm drains to make sure they are not covered with leaves and other debris. If so, rake or sweep up the debris. Keeping storm drains clear of leaves and pine needles will help prevent clogging of drains and prevent localized flooding of the street in front of your house and throughout your neighborhood. Always be aware of traffic conditions when working in the street and be sure to wear bright colors!
