County Renames Office of Assigned Counsel to Thurston County Public Defense
County Commissioners authorize rename to align name with mission

OLYMPIA - Thurston County Commissioners voted to approve the name change of the Office of Assigned Counsel (OAC) to Thurston County Public Defense (TCPD). This name change better aligns the name to reflect the mission of the office.

The mission of TCPD is to protect and defend the rights of clients through zealous, conscientious, and compassionate legal advocacy. It carries out the Constitutional right that all people accused of crimes, who are unable to afford a lawyer, will receive effective legal representation.

"We provide public defense services to our community and our name needs to reflect that," said Daryl Rodrigues, Director of Thurston County Public Defense. He said, "Most people didn't understand the term Office of Assigned Counsel so we wanted to align our name with what we do as well as make it understandable to the public and our clients."

The change in name is immediate but the public and clients will see a gradual transition. The office will use the supply of OAC stationary and other materials and will transition to TCPD as they order new supplies. This name change is low to no cost to the county.
