**If you are changing your last name due to marriage, you do not need to petition the court for a name change. Please refer to your marriage packet from the Auditor for further instructions.

Complete the Petition of Name Change, then email it to TCDCCivil@co.thurston.wa.us. Please include a copy of your Washington State ID. If you do not have a Washington State ID, please include proof of residency. You will receive a return email telling you how to pay the filing fee and receive a court date. You may petition the District Court to change your name for any reason except for the purpose of defrauding or misleading another person.
You may petition the District Court to change the name of your minor child. Complete the Petition for Minor's Name Change, then email that along with your Washington State ID, and the child's birth certificate to TCDCCivil@co.thurston.wa.us. If you do not have a Washington State ID, please include proof of residency. You will receive a return email telling you how to pay the filing fee and receive a court date.
The Court may grant the petition if the name change promotes the minor’s best interest and if both living parents' consent to the name change.
If one parent does not consent, you must have notice of the proposed name change served on that parent.

Per RCW: 4.24.130, if you, or your child, are changing their name, due to gender expression or identity, or due to reasonable fear of domestic violence, stalking, unlawful harassment, or coercive control, and you wish to have the name change file sealed, you may file your Petition for Name Change with the Thurston County Superior Court by going to:
